Budget constraints and the school community are important factors when selecting materials for the Library. My school is in a lower socio-economic area with 40% NESB(non-English speaking backgrounds) and 11% Aboriginal students therefore difficulty of texts and web-sites are a major consideration for us. Consultation within our committee groups often takes place before purchasing new materials so that doubling up does not occur and potential use of resources can be decided.
Using output measures such as the use of resources to decide on Library budgets could be misleading. Resources may not be used for a number of reasons, particularly if staff do not know the resource is available or how to use it to address a particular curriculum area. It may then remain on the shelf unused and deemed unnecessary.
